Chapter Ten

Before Jim went to bed that night, he checked on Culum as he did every night. He almost laughed aloud when he glanced into Culum's bedroom and spotted Clinger on the floor beside the bed in his usual spot and Jax up on the mattress at the foot of the bed. Jim had been concerned about how Jax would fit into the family, with Culum and Clinger. Of course the moment Culum saw Jax he wanted to grab him and pick him up. Jim still wasn't sure about Jax's temperament, so he insisted Culum take his time getting to know the new dog. Jim knew not all dogs loved children, especially those not raised with kids. They tended to shy away from kids because kids moved too fast and dogs couldn't trust them. As a result, the dogs tended to be on the defensive all the time. But Jax didn't growl or snarl once. He went over to Culum, looked up at him, and barked a few times. Clinger watched all this and wagged his tail, giving his sign of consent.

After Jim checked on Culum he went into the master bedroom and noticed Len was in the bathroom showering. He'd been out on the ranch all day, and then he'd gone to the shooting range with Doc, so this wasn't unusual for Len.

Jim crossed to a desk in the bedroom and removed all his clothes. Then he grabbed his tablet and climbed into bed to watch the last webcast Hal Robertson had made, the same webcast Jim had been half paying attention to the night Hal had disappeared. Jim knew that Hal's web site saved all his previously recorded webisodes so they could be viewed by as many people as possible, but he wasn't sure he'd find the last one online. He thought it might have been taken down due to the nature of what had happened.

Unfortunately, Jim actually did find that final webisode without a single issue. It was as if no one cared about whether Hal disappeared or not. Part of this Jim knew had to do with the fact that there had been a huge earthquake recently in Asia, a lost plane in the middle east, and a huge political sex scandal involving a governor from a southern state. The sex scandal alone with the governor had been hugely popular recently and had taken up most of the news, both local and global. That particular governor was a conservative anti-gay Republican who had been caught tapping toes in a public men's room looking for under stall gay action in the middle of the day. He claimed his foot slipped and the guy in the next stall misunderstood. But the cop who caught the governor blowing the guy under the stall seemed to know exactly what was happening. There were so many things happening in the world, and locally, Hal's disappearance seemed to go by almost completely unnoticed. But Jim couldn't stop thinking about what he knew so far and he had to watch that webcast one more time to see if there were any clues.
